SMS Export & Backup

Effective date: July 22, 2026

Privacy at a glance

1Who we are

SMS Export & Backup ("the App", "we", "us") is an Android application that lets you back up, export, and restore your SMS messages. This policy explains what information the App accesses, what it does with it, and the choices you have. By using the App you agree to this policy.

2Permissions the App uses and why

PermissionWhy it's needed
SMS (read) To read your messages so they can be backed up and exported. Messages are processed entirely on your device.
Contacts (read) To show contact names instead of raw phone numbers in the conversation list and in your exports. Contact data stays on your device.
Default SMS app role Requested temporarily and only during restore โ€” Android requires the default SMS app to write messages back to your inbox. The App prompts you to switch back to your regular messaging app as soon as the restore finishes.
Storage To save backup and export files (older Android versions only; newer versions need no storage permission).
You can revoke any permission at any time in Android Settings. The related feature will stop working, but the rest of the App remains usable.

3Your messages and backups

All reading, exporting (PDF, Excel, HTML, CSV, TXT, JSON), and restoring of messages happens locally on your device. We do not collect, receive, store, or have any access to the content of your messages, your contacts, or your backup files.

Cloud backups (optional)

If you choose to back up to Google Drive or Dropbox, the backup file is uploaded directly from your device to your own cloud account over an encrypted connection. Sign-in uses the official Google and Dropbox authorization flows; the App stores the resulting access tokens in your device's secure storage and never sees your account password. We have no access to your cloud accounts or the files in them. Cloud storage is governed by the respective provider's privacy policy: Google, Dropbox.

4Advertising

The free version shows ads served by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device identifiers (such as the advertising ID) and usage signals to serve and measure ads, as described in Google's Privacy Policy and AdMob's data practices.

In regions where consent is required (e.g., the EEA and UK), the App shows a consent form before any ads load, and you can choose non-personalized ads. You can change your choice later from your device's ad settings, and you can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time via Google Ad Settings.

Pro subscribers and lifetime purchasers see no ads, and no ad requests are made on their devices.

5Analytics and diagnostics

We use Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous, aggregated usage data โ€” such as which screens are used and general device information (model, OS version, country). This helps us find problems and improve the App. This data does not include message content, contacts, or file contents. See Firebase's privacy documentation.

6Purchases and subscriptions

Pro upgrades are processed by Google Play Billing. We never see or store your payment details. To validate purchases and manage your Pro entitlement across reinstalls, the App uses RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous app-generated identifier and purchase receipt data (never your name, email, or payment information). See the RevenueCat Privacy Policy.

7Data sharing

We do not sell your data, and we do not share personal information with third parties except the service providers named above (Google AdMob, Firebase, Google Play Billing, RevenueCat), each acting only to provide their function. Cloud backup uploads go exclusively to accounts you own and connect.

8Data retention and deletion

9Security

Backups are created and processed on-device; cloud uploads use encrypted (HTTPS) connections; cloud authorization tokens are kept in Android's secure storage. Legal PDF exports include a SHA-256 integrity digest so tampering can be detected. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we design the App so that the most sensitive data โ€” your messages โ€” never leaves your control.

10Your rights

Depending on your region (e.g., GDPR in the EEA/UK, CCPA in California), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data and to object to processing. Because the App keeps your content on your device and in your own accounts, you can exercise most of these rights directly. For anything else โ€” or any privacy question โ€” contact us and we will respond promptly.

11Children

The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

12Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes are published on this page with an updated effective date. Material changes will also be highlighted in the App or its store listing.
